Penn fell to Saint Joseph's by a score of 47-44 at the Palestra Saturday night in the annual Big 5 Hall of Fame game.
The night featured a celebration of the Big 5's storied past, and the long-absent tradition of throwing streamers after a team's first basket made its much-anticipated return, if only for one night.
The game was a low-scoring affair, with defense on both sides keeping the scores below 50. During the second half, the Hawks went well over 10 minutes without scoring a field goal.
Despite this, a multitude of fouls by the Quakers kept the game close, and with about a minute left, the Hawks took a lead they would not relinquish. A last-minute comeback attempt by Penn failed, as both the officials and the Quakers' shooting sealed the deal for the Hawks.
Mark Zoller and Steve Danley lead Penn (10-6, 1-3 Big 5) with 13 points, with Zoller recording 10 rebounds for a double-double. Rob Ferguson scored a game-high 18 points for St. Joe's (9-8, 3-0 Big 5).
Penn next takes the court against Brown, Friday at 7 p.m. at the Palestra.
