League rewards Jaaber for strong weekend

Quakers guard Ibrahim Jaaber earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors yet again, this time for the first full weekend of conference play. He has received the honor three times so far this year and two times in January alone.

The award comes on the heels of Penn's dominant showing in its first two Ancient Eight games, in which it dispatched Columbia and Cornell by a combined 72 points. The junior played a major part in both victories, averaging 19 points, 4.5 steals and five assists in the two contests.

Jaaber currently leads the Ivy League in scoring (18.8 ppg) and steals (3.23 spg), the second mark good for seventh in the nation.

ECAC honors gymnast after successful meet

Sophomore Stephanie Ortiz was named the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) gymnast of the week for the role she played in Saturday's season-opening quad meet against Towson, Ursinus and Wilson.

The Penn gymnast won the all-around competition at the meet, amassing a score of 37.900. Although she did not place first in any event, she did set a personal best of 9.600 in the vault, good for fifth. Elsewhere she came in third on the beam (9.525), fourth on the bars (9.375) and fourth on the floor (9.400).

Although she had a career day, the Quakers still fell short of first-place Towson by just three quarters of a point.
