Diverse comedians picked for show

After bringing rap artist Common to Philadelphia last spring, the next goal of the minority division of the Social Planning and Events Committee is to make students laugh.

Comedians Katt Williams and Eliot Chang will be performing at the Social Planning and Events Committee to Represent Undergraduate Minorities' "Evening of Comedy" show on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at the Zellerbach Theatre.

The comedy night will feature sets from the two comedians, a question-and-answer session with both and a workshop on Asians in the media run by Chang.

"I really think this is going to be a popular event because it's such a diverse show," SPEC-TRUM Director Ahmed Whitt said.

In the past, SPEC-TRUM has brought national acts like Talib Kweli, Kanye West, Mike Epps and Aries Spears to campus and also holds an annual spring concert.

Williams, who is headlining this fall's show, has had major roles in NBC's The Tracy Morgan Show as well as MTV's Nick Cannon's Wild 'n' Out. He appeared in the movie Friday After Next and on NYPD Blue.

"We started planning this in the beginning of the year by brainstorming names of comedians," Whitt said. "Williams is in a lot of recent stuff, and he was definitely the most popular choice on the committee."

Chang has been a regular on Comedy Central shows such as Premium Blend and Contest Searchlight.

Still, it seems as if most people in the Penn community are not too familiar with these acts.

"I haven't heard of either of the acts, but I think students would still want to go," College sophomore Robert Havens said.

Wharton freshman Amy Chang, who also had not heard of the two, agreed with Havens.

"I would probably still go, and I think most people would be interested in it," Chang said.

Tickets for the show will be sold on Locust Walk and at the Annenberg Center box office starting today. The tickets are $5 for anyone with a PennCard and $10 for regular tickets. Day-of-show tickets are $10 for PennCard holders and $15 for others.

Whitt said that the prices are down from last year, when Penn students were charged $8.

"I think that a lot more people will attend because we are keeping the ticket prices down," Whitt said.

SPEC Chair Catey Mark said that the price of this year's act is lower than last year's, which has enabled SPEC-TRUM to lower ticket prices. SPEC-TRUM's budget has remained constant and is a portion of the nearly $600 thousand the Undergraduate Assembly allocated to SPEC for the school year.
