Villanova coach Andy Talley knew his offense needed a makeover.
He was one week removed from watching his electrifying quarterback Marvin Burroughs go down with a broken arm. He was one week away from a showdown against Penn at Franklin Field.
Plenty of time, really.
After all, in college football, a complete makeover only takes 60 minutes.
Saturday, in a win over Northeastern, it was out with Marvin Burroughs, the Wildcats' flashy, mobile junior who was injured after a seven-yard run in their loss to Rutgers.
And it was in with sophomore Frank Jankowski -- a more typical pocket passer.
The result was an offensive attack perfectly fitting Jankowski's style. Jankowski rushed only twice and completed 16 out of 25 passes for 241 yards, a long touchdown and an interception.
Despite the good numbers, the Quakers won't be disappointed to miss Burroughs, who ran for five touchdowns -- one against Penn -- last year and has drawn comparisons to another local quarterback.
"Marvin is a Donovan McNabb type," Talley said. "Frank is really more of a drop-back passer. He's not the real runner like Marvin is."
While Jankowski may not put up the numbers on the ground, he is by no means a sitting duck in the pocket. Last week against the Huskies, Jankowski was sacked just once.
"He has good enough feet to get out of trouble," Talley said.
In only his second career appearance at the helm of the Wildcats offense, Jankowski's top moment came when he hit Anton Ridley for a 27-yard score.
He also got plenty of help from his friends, as running back Matt Dicken rushed for two touchdowns, and Villanova scored on a blocked punt and a recovered fumble in a 38-20 home win.
As for Burroughs, the broken humerus ended his junior season and his hopes of being one of the top quarterbacks in Division I-AA -- at least for now.
Burroughs and his family took the news in stride, knowing that moments like this are part of the game of football.
"He's one of those kids that always has a smile on his face," Talley said.
And that smile will only get bigger if his backup can lead the Wildcats to another win this weekend against the Quakers.
