Police arrest area man in recent robberies

18-year-old West Phila. resident faces charges related to robbery, theft, weapons violations

Penn Police arrested a West Philadelphia resident April 15 and charged him last Friday for his alleged role in a string of area robberies.

The suspect, Edward Lewis, is 18 years old.

Penn Police arrested Lewis and a juvenile accomplice after allegedly seeing them rob a University of the Sciences student at about 1 a.m. near the intersection of 42nd Street and Woodland Avenue.

Following the arrest, police conducted an investigation of Lewis, which they said revealed his involvement with two other campus robberies.

In addition to the charges he received for the April 15 case, Lewis is charged with five counts of robbery, theft and receiving stolen property. He is also charged with weapons violations and related charges.

Police said Lewis is responsible for the armed robbery of three female students that occurred at approximately 2:15 a.m. April 2.

Lewis allegedly revealed a semiautomatic gun and demanded that the women -- who were walking at 42nd and Osage streets -- give him their purses.

Lewis also allegedly robbed two female students at 4:15 a.m. March 26.

The women reported that they were near 41st and Locust streets when a robber demanded their purses.

The description they gave was matched to Lewis.

The women did not suffer injuries in either case.

The three females involved in the April 2 incident had described the robber as a black male with a medium-dark complexion, stocky build and short hair.
