Culture of life

To the Editor:

I wanted to clarify a few issues raised by Eliot Sherman and Kevin Collins' columns.

Sherman may not feel as though President Bush is active enough in opposing capital punishment and the genocide in Darfur, but, on Penn's campus, the "culture of life" extends to both of these issues. Like abortion, genocide and capital punishment are clear and deliberate infractions against life, and, as such, Penn for Life is opposed to them.

Consequently, we are actively working alongside campus groups to show our commitment to these causes.

As for Sherman's claim that campus debates on abortion become hairy because pro-lifers "assail passers-by with pictures of mangled fetuses," this is simply not true. Our posters and other efforts underscore the beauty of life and the message that women deserve better than abortion.

On April 4, for example, Penn for Life hosted Sally Winn, the Vice President of Feminists for Life of America. She addressed a crowd of over 140 Penn students and emphasized the importance of supporting pregnant women by providing them with the resources and emotional support they need.

Penn for Life would not be supporting the ACLU's efforts to oppose the death penalty this week or STAND's genocide awareness efforts if we did not firmly believe in the right to life of all people from conception to natural death.
