Tournament, holiday will pack campus restaurants

For Penn students over 21 years of age -- or for those with good fake IDs -- campus bars will be a hotbed of activity during Penn's first round NCAA Tournament game against Boston College.

Fans clad in red and blue will have to contend with patrons in green, however, because bars are expecting heavy traffic for Saint Patrick's Day.

Cavanaugh's, located on 39th and Sansom Streets, is expecting a lot of Saint Patrick's Day revelers, according to employee Dan Lipson. The restaurant boasted that it will be showing all the tournament games, not just Penn's matchup.

Penn's most historic bar, Smokey Joe's, will be showing the game and may have some food specials, according to chef Steve Rubin.

Rubin wasn't sure exactly what would be going on at Smokes, calling the afternoon "uncharted territory."

However, he did promise a fun time for all who attend.

For students who abstain from indulging in cocktails at three in the afternoon, the University will be sponsoring several events.

The Pottruck Health & Fitness Center will hosting a "screening event full of games, prizes, and trivia," Kristy Fletcher, an assistant in Penn's Marketing and Ticketing department, said in an e-mail.

No matter which event students choose to attend, Penn's NCAA Tournament matchup will give them the opportunity to eat, drink and be merry.
