Carlin wins 500m, DMR sets record

Freshman Jesse Carlin set a school record in the 500-meters as the Penn women's track team finished 16th at the ECAC Championships in Boston over spring break.

The Staten Island, N.Y., native won the 500 in 1:11.77.

The highlight of the break for the men's track team came in the distance medley relay at the Alex Wilson Invitational, in which the Quakers set a school record.

Courtney Jaworski, Eric Ljungquist, Tim Kaijala and Stephen Hayes finished 16th in the race, but they broke a Penn record that had stood for 21 years.

Jaworski, who was placed on the All-Ivy list in two different events, finished second in the 800-meters, while pole-vaulter Neal Wojodowski placed second at the IC4A Championships.

The women's squad also had a second-place finish with the distance medley relay team of Stacy Kim, Shawnee Morgan, Tina Morrison and Claire Kim.

Buechel, Berkowsky win fencing Regionals

Sophomore Holly Buechel won the women's epee as Penn placed four fencers in the top three of various events at the NCAA Regionals over spring break.

Freshman Ron Berkowsky, who upset the field to win the Intercollegiate Fencing Association title, took his second straight meet, winning the Regionals in the foil.

Sophomore Michael Galligan finished right behind Berkowsky in the men's foil, Christina Kaneshige, a junior, placed second in the women's foil.

Those four fencers, as well as sophomores Eve Overton, who was fourth in the foil, Katelyn Sherry and Cassandra Frey made the NCAA Championships. Sherry and Frey placed third and fifth in the sabre, respectively.

The championship meet will be held at Rice University in Houston and goes from Thursday through Sunday.

This weekend's meet will serve as a homecoming for Galligan, a native of Houston.

Dartmouth women draw Connecticut

For the second year in a row, the Ivy League champion in women's basketball drew the defending champions -- and both years it was Connecticut.

Dartmouth, which won the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by defeating Harvard, 75-61, in a playoff, will face UConn in a first round game on the Huskies' home floor.

Last season, UConn defeated Ivy League champion Penn, 91-55, en route to its third consecutive national championship.

The game between the third-seeded Huskies and the 14th-seeded Big Green will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Dartmouth, which swept the season series against Penn, is led by sophomore center Elise Morrison, who is averaging 15.9 points per game.
