PRINCETON, N.J. -- Penn swept its season series against rival Princeton tonight with a 64-56 win at Jadwin Gymnasium.
The loss gives the Tigers (15-13, 6-8 Ivy) their first ever season with a losing record in Ivy League play.
But the milestone was much better for the Quakers, whose seniors went to 7-1 against Princeton in the last four seasons.
Four players for the Quakers (20-8, 13-1 Ivy) scored in double digits -- Steve Danley (13 points), Ibby Jaaber (13), Jan Fikiel (12) and Tim Begley (10).
The Quakers held a 32-29 lead at the half, and while Princeton came within one twice, Penn would never relinquish that lead the rest of the way. Penn sealed the victory with 6-for-7 free-throw shooting and a Danley dunk in the final minute. The trips to the line continued a trend that started in the first half. The Quakers went to the line 41 times, making 30, and Fikiel's 12 points all came from the line on 14 attempts. Princeton had to deal with foul trouble the entire game, as senior center Judson Wallace committed three first half fouls en route to fouling out for the second time in as many games against the Quakers. Backup center and fellow senior Mike Stephens also fouled out, putting an early end to his Senior Night at Jadwin Gym. Four seniors led the way for the Tigers in the loss, as Wallace, Stephens, Will Venable and Andre Logan combined for 42 of the Tigers' 56 points.
NOTES: Penn guard Eric Osmundson was too sick to make the trip to Princeton. David Whitehurst got his fourth start of the season and scored seven points in 38 minutes.
Venable's first basket of the game put him at 1,001 career points, making him the second Tigers player to score his 1,000th point against Penn this year. Wallace reached 1,000 in the Quakers' 70-62 overtime win at the Palestra on Feb. 8.
The Quakers shot 15-for-42 from the field, and the 15 field goals tied a season-low. Penn went 15-for-47 in a 77-44 loss at Wisconsin on Nov. 18.
