Boston College used a 22-4 run to take a 48-28 halftime lead and cruise to an 85-65 victory over Penn in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Senior guard Tim Begley ended his career with a 19-point performance for the 13th-seeded Quakers (20-9). The 20-point halftime deficit was too much for the Quakers to handle, and while they came within nine in the second half, BC (25-4) was in control the entire time. Sophomore Mark Zoller scored 16, and Ibby Jaaber added 15, but there was too much Craig Smith for Boston College. The junior forward had 15 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists, as the Eagles placed five players in double figures. BC shot 58 percent from the field to Penn's 35, and also hit eight of its 12 three-point attempts, seven of which came in the first half. Other than Begley, Zoller and Jaaber, no Penn player scored more than six points. The loss was Penn's eighth straight in NCAA Tournament play, dating back to 1994.
