It wasn't pretty. It wasn't easy. But it was the ninth straight win for the Penn men's basketball team. The Quakers used 27 Columbia fouls to go 33-for-47 from the free-throw line and defeat the Lions, 73-66 at the Palestra Friday night. Columbia shot only eight free throws on the night. Penn, which trailed by as many as five in the second half, improved to 13-7 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the Ivy League heading into Saturday's matchup with second-place Cornell. The Big Red stands at 5-2 after beating Princeton Friday. Sophomore forward Steve Danley led the procession to the line with his 14-for-17 performance. Danley finished the contest with 18 points, tying him for game-high honors with Columbia's Matt Preston. Senior guard Tim Begley, who scored 13 points, and sophomore guard Ibby Jaaber, who added 15, sank two free throws apiece to stretch a three-point lead out to the final margin in the last minute of play. Jeremiah Boswell added 17 points for the Lions, who fell to 12-8 overall and 3-4 in the league. Saturday's game against Cornell, which will tip off at the Palestra at 7 p.m., will mark the end of the first half of the Ivy season for the Quakers. A win would give them a three-game lead in the loss column heading into the season's second half.
