Devastating loss for W. Hoops

Second half collapse vs. Brown puts Quakers three games out of first

After a Cat Makarewich three-pointer gave Penn a 45-33 lead with 17:41 to play Friday night against Brown, the Quakers suffered a disastrous collapse that put any hope of an Ivy League title in serious jeopardy. Five minutes and 19 seconds after the Makarewich three, the Penn score still read 45, but Brown's had ballooned to 54. The 21-0 run had the visiting Bears well on their way to an eventual 76-69 victory. Penn fell to 12-9 and 5-3 in the Ivy League, three full games behind Dartmouth, which won easily over Cornell. A solid first half in which Jennifer Fleischer scored 10 points and collected eight rebounds gave the Quakers a 39-33 lead at the intermission. However, the Quakers shot 7-of-29 from the floor in the second half, a dreadful 24.1 percent, while the Bears (15-7, 7-2 Ivy) shot 54.5 percent. Fleischer recorded yet another double-double, finishing with 17 points and 17 rebounds, marking the 20th time this season she has led the Quakers in rebounding. Guard Karen Habrukowich poured in 16 points, while Makarewich added 11. Brown's Holly Robertson, the 6-foot-5 center, finished the game with 20 points, including three three-pointers. Sarah Hayes dropped a game-high 23 points for the Bears, shot 12-of-13 from the line and hit critical free throws down the stretch to prevent Penn from getting back in the game.
