A 22-year-old woman was robbed by two armed men just south of campus Wednesday night.
Police later made two arrests in connection with the crime, which occurred around 8 p.m. on the 4000 block of Pine Street.
Jeffery Tolbert, 19, and a 13-year-old male -- whose name police could not release -- have been charged with robbery, first degree felony, theft, third degree misdemeanor, receiving stolen property, violation of gun laws and criminal conspiracy. Both males live in West Philadelphia.
Police recovered an Astra 9-millimeter gun and a backpack belonging to the victim. The backpack contained an IBM ThinkPad laptop and several personal items.
An independent witness called police at 7:58 p.m. and provided them with details of the robbery and the criminals' attire, Penn Police Detective John Peterson said.
When a patrol officer spotted two males that matched the given description at 40th and Locust streets and began to approach them, the juvenile began to run east on Locust and Tolbert ran north on 40th Street.
Peterson said Penn Police's burglary team chased the juvenile down Locust Walk through the walkway between St. Mary's Church and Civic House before catching him.
Tolbert was arrested near 40th and Locust streets.
Both defendants remain in custody, but their judicial processes will differ because of the age discrepancy. Tolbert will remain at the police station at 55th and Pine streets until his preliminary hearing, which will occur within the next two to 10 days. The juvenile will stay at a holding center at 20th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
Peterson said police will request that the District Attorney certify the juvenile as an adult, which would allow him to receive the same sentence that an adult would.
The victim was not injured in any way, Peterson said.
Witnesses Wednesday night incorrectly said that the crime had been committed against an elderly neighborhood resident, as was previously reported.
