M. Soccer ends season with win over Harvard

The Penn men's soccer team capped off a disappointing season with a positive change -- a 1-0 victory over Harvard.

The lone goal was scored just after the nine-minute mark by sophomore Andy Howard. Senior Josh Duyan took a direct kick that Howard stopped and put past Crimson keeper Ryan Johnson for the winning tally.

Penn goalkeeper Daniel Cepero had six saves as Harvard outshot the Quakers 6-3.

The win snapped a seven-game winless streak, the last six of which were losses, that dropped Penn out of Ivy League title contention.

But on Senior Day at Rhodes Field, the Quakers finally returned to their form from earlier in the season to finish off the 2004 campaign at 7-8-2.

Lieb, Tully qualify for NCAA Championships

Both the men's and women's cross country teams competed at the NCAA Mid Atlantic Regional Championships at Penn State over the weekend.

The biggest noise was made on the men's side, as seniors Dusty Lieb and Nolan Tully finished in the top 10 and earned at-large bids to the NCAA Championships. Penn failed to qualify as a team.

Lieb finished in sixth overall, completing the 10-kilometer course in 30:39. Tully took eighth place with a time of 30:42. Senior Stephen Hayes came in with a 19th-place finish.

Rob Koborsi of Georgetown led the Hoyas to victory, and American took the second spot to qualify for the NCAA Championships as a team. Penn finished third.

The women were led by freshman Claire Kim, who placed 33rd with a time of 22:20. Sophomores Jennifer Blank and Jackie Dunn finished in 35th and 37th, respectively.

Lieb and Tully now move to the 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championships Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind.

Fencing closes out fall season with successes

It was the final competition of the fall season for both the men's and women's fencing teams, and both squads placed several student-athletes in the top 25.

On the men's side, it was the freshmen who produced the weekend's most surprising results. Rookie Ronald Berkowsky finished 10th in the foil and senior Stephen Gavalas placed 23rd for the Red and Blue.

In the men's epee, it was another freshman, Alex Tozzo, who paced the Quakers with a 17th- place finish.

The freshmen made it three-for-three by leading the team in the sabre. Freshman Zachary Yeates' 19th-place finish was followed by junior Jonathan Press, who placed 24th.

The women's squad was also led by younger athletes. It was freshman Zoya Abdikulova who netted the women's highest finish in the foil competition, 15th.

In the epee, freshman Angelika Kyrimi took a 16th-place finish, followed by sophomore Margaret Foster, who finished 23rd.

The sophomores also made their presence felt, with sophomores Katelyn Sherry and Cassandra Frey placing fifth and 17th, respectively.

The Quakers will not return to action until after the holiday break. Both teams will next compete Jan. 22, 2005, when they travel to State College, Pa., for the Penn State Multi Meet.

Feast's first-place finish leads Penn's wrestlers

Looking to improve on a successful 2003-04 season, the Penn wrestling team started off this year with a third-place finish in the SUNY Brockport-Oklahoma Gold Classic in Brockport, N.Y.

Senior Matt Feast was the most successful Quakers grappler over the weekend, winning the 285 pound division.

Also placing for the Red and Blue were senior Shawn Protz, who finished second in the 133 pound division, and freshman Zach Shanaman, junior Dustin Wiles and senior Marcus Schontube, who each finished third in the 157 pound, 174 pound and 197 pound divisions, respectively.

Overall, Oklahoma won the tournament with a score of 212.5. Penn finished just behind runner-up Kent State, which finished with 92.5 points, ahead of the Quakers' 89.5.
