Man carrying butcher knife detained near police station

A male walking down the street with a butcher knife was arrested outside the Penn Police headquarters at approximately 6:30 p.m. yesterday evening, according to police.

The man, who appeared to be in his 20s, was put into a spread-eagle position against the wall of the police headquarters at 4040 Chestnut St. as officers searched his clothing, rifling through his pockets. He was then handcuffed and brought into the station.

There were at least five or six police officers present for the arrest. Police Chief Mark Dorsey and Vice President for Public Safety Maureen Rush also both came outside to personally oversee the situation.

No one seems to have been physically harmed by the man.

Police declined to provide any further information about the incident last night, saying that they wanted to further investigate the matter before making any statements about the nature of the arrest or the detainee.

It was unclear last night whether the man is affiliated with the University in any way.
