News Brief: Clinton schedules event in Center City for Kerry

Former President Bill Clinton will be in Philadelphia on Monday to give a speech on behalf of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, in his first campaign stop since his recent heart surgery.

According to an e-mail from the Penn Democrats, Kerry will also be in attendance, though campaign staff had not confirmed that as of yesterday.

Clinton will be speaking to a lunchtime crowd that will need tickets to attend the event. The former president said recently that he will be working with the Kerry-Edwards campaign to turn out as many Democratic voters as possible in swing states in the two weeks leading up to Election Day.

After undergoing quadruple bypass surgery last month, Clinton has been recovering steadily but is under doctor's orders to rest as much as possible.

Pennsylvania is viewed as one of the most important states in this election, and political analysts say that if Kerry does not win the state's 21 electoral votes, it will be very difficult for him to win the overall election. Recent polls have the candidates neck-and-neck in Pennsylvania.

Though it was rumored last week that the Bush campaign would not make any more stops in the state, the president will be in Hershey, Pa., this afternoon.
