Loguidice leads Sprint Football to demolition of rival Princeton

The Penn sprint football team earned its 15th straight win against league rival Princeton, trouncing the Tigers, 49-8, on Friday.

In the first half, Penn (2-0) established its lead with a 25-yard field goal by sophomore Peter Stine, followed by touchdowns from sophomore J.T. Hutchinson and juniors David Derr and Corey Higa.

Princeton posted its only touchdown near the end of the second quarter, on a 55-yard pass.

Opening the second half, Derr caught a 43-yard pass to score his second touchdown of the night.

Freshman Kale Roth returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown later in the third quarter, making the score 36-8. The Quakers' offense scored two more times before the game concluded.

Key to the team's victory was sophomore quarterback Michael Loguidice, who threw for 231 yards and four touchdowns. Loguidice credits the offensive linemen for the Quakers' success.

"They cleared the way for our backs and gave great pass protection," Loguidice said.

According to Penn coach Bill Wagner, the offensive line is made up of experienced veterans. All but one starter is returning from last season.

Penn's defense, on the other hand, has eight new players. Experienced leader and senior co-captain Mike Russo recorded 10 tackles for the defense.

So far, Penn's experienced offense and young defense have proven to be an effective combination. In their season-opening game, the Quakers had no problem defeating Cornell, 35-13.

Wagner said that Penn exploded offensively against Cornell, a team the Quakers will meet again later this month in Ithaca, N.Y., in official Collegiate Sprint Football League play.

The Red and Blue now turn their attention to Army, a traditional CSFL powerhouse, which they face on Oct. 16 at Franklin Field. Penn has not recorded a win against Army since 2000, when the Quakers secured an undefeated season.

"Beating Army will be a monumental task, but we think we can challenge them for the title," Wagner said.

Wagner believes the greatest strengths of the team lie in its offensive and defensive speed as well as in its leadership. Senior co-captains Russo, Doug Pires and Adam Schlosser bring experience to the team as four-year starters. The Quakers will need this leadership and athleticism against the Black Knights.

The Quakers' sophomore signal-caller also stressed the importance of working as a team.

"We need to believe in each other in order to win against Army," Loguidice said.
