The Quakers got back on the right track today at Franklin Field with a 35-0 win over Ivy foe Dartmouth. Senior wide receiver Dan Castles got the Red and Blue on the board with a trio of touchdowns in the first half, including a 52-yard lob from quarterback Pat McDermott. Castles finished the day with 23 catches for 132 yards. McDermott established the passing game early -- something that has evaded the Quakers in the initial two outings -- completing 16-of-23 passes in the first half for 207 yards and three touchdowns.
The Quakers defense once again stepped up holding Dartmouth out of the red zone the entire day. Dartmouth managed just 81 yards on the ground and 232 yards on the day.
Big Green quarterback Charlie Rittgers was kept at bay throughout the contest. Penn held the junior signal caller to 178 yards, but more importantly picked off three errant passes -- two of which were returned for touchdowns. "I was really impressed with us as a defense as a whole," said senior linebacker Luke Hadden, who ran in a Rittgers' interception for touchdown in the fourth quarter. "I think we effectively shut them down." Penn improves to 2-1 and 1-0 in Ancient Eight play, while Dartmouth drops to 0-3. Check back for updates later in the day on dailypennsylvanian.com.
