W. Golf wins tournament for first time led by Aylor
The Penn women's golf team won its first ever tournament title this past weekend at the Lehigh Fall Invitational.
The Quakers, who consisted of just four golfers, shot a combined 326 to lead the eight-team field.
Senior Melissa Aylor won her second collegiate tournament with an even par 72.
"It was our first tournament victory as a team, and we are extremely excited," Penn head Coach Frances Vaughn said in a press release. "We won by eight shots, so Melissa's score was a huge help for us to beat the rest of the field. Even more impressive was that we only brought four players and all their scores had to count. Each one stepped up and played great for their first outing of the season."
Aylor, a senior from Tampa, Fla., continued her strong play from the spring, when she finished in the top 10 in every event in which she competed. However, she had not won a tournament since the William and Mary Invitational in March 2003.
The women's golf team goes for two in a row this weekend when it travels to Princeton for the Princeton Fall Invitational.
--Harry Berezin Duyan named Player of the Week in M. Soccer
The South Carolina men's soccer players were not the only ones who took notice of Penn after the Quakers' 2-1 upset of the 18th-ranked Gamecocks Saturday at Rhodes Field.
The Ivy League honored Penn senior Josh Duyan with its Men's Soccer Player of the Week award.
Duyan played a key role in both of Penn's goals. First, he broke a scoreless tie in the 63rd minute after weaving through a series of defenders. Then, after South Carolina tied the game at 1-1, Duyan set up classmate Stephen Kroculick for the game-winner in the 79th minute.
The midfielder has started every game for the Quakers this season and is tied for fourth on the team with three points.
--H.B. Men's X-Country takes first at Delaware Invite
For the second straight season, the Penn men's cross-country team captured the title at the Delaware Invitational Cross-Country meet.
Five Quakers finished in the top six at last weekend's meet, which was held at White Clay Creek in Newark, Del. Freshman Brian Goldberg led the Quakers with a second-place finish.
He was followed by a pack of Penn runners that took third-through-sixth place, all finishing under 28 minutes. Mike LaQuaglia placed third followed by Mike Cassidy, Reid McEwen and Daniel Howard.
