Heavily chlorinated tap water puzzles residents

Students complain about strong taste, smell; Facilities officials unaware of causes yesterday

Various faucets around campus have recently been distributing highly chlorinated water.

The problem was spotted this past weekend in various locations including Harrison College House, Hamilton College House and Hamilton Court, causing an unpleasant situation that particularly affected those students who drink the water.

"It has some weird taste," College and Wharton sophomore Aziza Zakhidova said. "Even after boiling [the water], it doesn't go away."

She added that for her room, the problem began after students came back to campus from winter break.

Zakhidova, who lives in Hamilton College House, did not call Maintenance because she felt the problem was not severe enough to require specialized intervention.

Perhaps because of student reluctance, Maintenance personnel said they had no indication there was any problem with the water system in the college houses.

"We sent someone over [to Harrison] but we couldn't find any issue," Facilities Services Director Betsy Robinson said. "And we still haven't received any calls" from residents.

Yet students from other houses have also complained about the water.

"You can smell it on some days," College sophomore and Harrison resident Peggy Yang said. "But it's not constant."

Yang said she and her roommates did not call maintenance because they thought the city's water system was involved, since they heard the problem was widespread and had affected some off-campus housing.

Though the smell is not overpowering, Yang said the situation is still a nuisance.

While some students report that similar problems have affected Hamilton Court residents, others living in the same building said they are not experiencing any problem.

"I really haven't noticed -- besides the fact that it's Philadelphia water," College sophomore and Hamilton Court resident Erin Smart said.
