Today's issue of the paper marks the first official publication of the 120th Board of Editors and Managers.
In the spirit of 120 years of tradition, we will endeavor to provide the campus with coverage that is both interesting and relevant. We have some big shoes to fill, but we are confident in our skills and training.
Over the course of the coming year, we will attempt to cover campus and city events with a fair and open-minded attitude, maintaining journalistic objectivity to the best of our abilities. We will also attempt to complement our news coverage with creative and informative features.
Our Sports Department will continue to bring games to life on the pages of the newspaper and will focus not just on the highest-profile events but on all the ones that pertain to the University community.
With the Photo Department, we will have a much greater presence on the Web site, which will give us the opportunity to do in-depth photo stories. Our photographers will travel to events and will enhance our stories with their craft.
34th Street, our weekly arts and entertainment magazine, will focus more on reviews, providing readers with greater background on all aspects of culture and events around Penn and the Philadelphia area.
Our Web site will continue to provide updates for breaking news, as well as a forum for commentary on all aspects of our coverage. We also will begin an overhaul which will present our online content in a more user-friendly manner.
Our award-winning Design Department will strive to continue its tradition of excellence, and each day, our editorial page will attempt to spark debate and discussion among members of the Penn community on the pressing issues of the day.
We also recognize that, as a significant media outlet on campus, we have a responsibility to be extremely careful about how our stories reflect upon the people who are portrayed in them.
We have no better gauge to determine how good of a job we are doing than you, the reader. If you see something that you like or do not like in a story, photograph, column or any other aspect of the paper, we ask that you call us or write a letter to the editor.
Anyone who wishes to become involved with the paper, or is simply curious about its day-to-day operations, is more than welcome to attend our introductory meetings for the business side at 4:30 p.m. and the editorial side at 5:30 p.m. this Thursday.
We put a tremendous amount of effort into every issue of The Daily Pennsylvanian, and we hope that you get as much out of it as we do.
