A fire started in a duplex on 40th Street near Fairmount Avenue around 4:00 on Tuesday afternoon. It spread from 708 40th Street to the house adjacent to it, and smoke was visible from High Rise North. All residents walked out of the house, and no one was hurt, Officer Walter McRae said. However, at 5:30 p.m. approximately 30 firefighters and eight vehicles -- including fire trucks, police cars and ambulances -- remained on the street. The residents were being sheltered in a home down the street.
