Penn Relays kicks off with heptathlon, decathlon

Though the spectators won't pack the stands until tomorrow, the Penn Relays officially began yesterday with the college men's decathlon and college women's heptathlon.

Both events continue through today, with Lock Haven's Matt Stinson leading the decathlon through five events and Florida A&M;'s Robin McClain leading the heptathlon through four.

Penn senior Mike George currently stands in fourth place in the decathlon with 3,589 points through the first five events.

Cornell's Vito Spadafino is the only other Ivy League athlete to compete in either the decathlon or heptathlon.

Neither of the records appear to be in danger -- Tennessee's Tom Pappas recorded 8,463 points in the decathlon in 1999 and George Mason's Diane Guthrie-Gresham recorded 6,527 in 1995.

The track portion of the Penn Relays begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the college women's 400m hurdles.

The college women's distance medley relay headlines tomorrow's action and begins at 4:30 p.m.
