Dunphy has not had talks with Penn St.

After the Penn men's basketball team was bounced from the NCAA Tournament, March Madness continued for its head coach.

In yesterday's Philadelphia Daily News Fran Dunphy was rumored to be a possible candidate for Penn State's recently-vacated head coaching position.

Dunphy however, states that he was not in touch with anyone from Penn State regarding the opening.

"No I have not yet," Dunphy said when asked if he had been contacted by the Nittany Lions.

In the last three years, Dunphy had been a strong candidate for an assistant coaching job with the San Antonio Spurs and a head coaching job at La Salle. Dunphy graduated from La Salle in 1970.

Given that the Quakers were just eliminated from the NCAA Tournament Friday, Dunphy said he was a little preoccupied to be considering future plans as of yet.

"I'm so wrapped up in thinking about our guys and busy with what's transpired in the last couple days," Dunphy said. "I'm concerned about [the six seniors]."

"It's just not something I've thought about that much," Dunphy said.

The Big 5 might be where all the candidates for the Nittany Lions opening comes from.

Phil Martelli, the coach of Saint Joseph's, was also rumored to be a potential candidate. However, Martelli is an alum of St. Joe's and told The Daily News, "I'm not going anywhere."

After turning down two potential dream jobs, the NBA and his alma mater, it would seem that Dunphy is content with life in the Ivy League.

Following the loss to Oklahoma State which ended Penn's season, Dunphy stated how much he enjoyed coaching the "low-maintenance" players that populate the Ivy League.

While he would not deny the possibility of ever moving on, Dunphy did say he would be happy to spend his coaching career in West Philadelphia.

"If I coached here and nowhere else for the rest of my life, I would consider that one hell of a career," Dunphy said yesterday. "It's a great place."
