Freshman Repetto gets to round of 16

The Quakers' star fell in the round of 16, and then the consolation round at ISA Individuals.

The Penn men's squash team closed out its season over the weekend in Princeton, N.J., at the National Intercollegiate Squash Racquets Association Individual Championships.

Four Penn players were selected to compete in the Individual Championships.

Freshman Richard Repetto, the Penn No. 1, competed in the A division as the No. 6 seed.

Junior Sam Miller, senior Roberto Kriete and junior co-captain Elan Levy, the Quakers two through four players respectively, competed in the B Division.

Repetto opened the weekend on a high note, demolishing Cornell No. 1, Tim Nagel, 3-0.

"I was satisfied with my first match. I went out and did what I had to," Repetto said.

Repetto struggled throughout his next match in the round of 16, losing to Anshul Manchanda of Yale, 3-0.

The loss put Repetto in the consolation bracket. Repetto then faced Trinity's Nick Kyme. Kyme defeated Repetto, 3-1.

"I was still down from my previous match in the round of 16," Repetto said. "I struggled against the Yale player and just didn't come ready to play in the consolation match."

While Repetto was disappointed with his performance, Sam Miller put forth a strong effort to end his season.

Miller, after an easy 3-0 win in the first game, pulled out a victory in a grueling five-game match against the No. 3 seed in the B division, Hobart's Tejvir Rathorne.

"Individually, I am pleased with my performance," Miller said. "Given my seeding, playing the third seed and beating him was one of the biggest wins of the year for me."

Roberto Kriete won his first round match in four games, before falling to Yale's Gavin Cumberbatch in three.

Elan Levy entered the Individual Championships as an alternate.

Levy played in the consolation bracket after a player dropped out. Dennett Wilkens defeated Levy, 3-1, in the second round of consolation play.

The Quakers' feelings surrounding the weekend's performance were mixed.

"It was a disappointing weekend for me personally," Repetto said. "I am looking forward to coming back strong next year. Now I know what I have to do and will look to improve over the offseason."

Miller was pleased with his performance.

"The season, individually, hasn't been ideal for me, but it ended on a high note," he said.

The Quakers will lose only two of the eight players on their ladder -- co-captain John Griffin and Kriete -- to graduation. Penn looks to return a strong team next year and use its unusual depth at the bottom of the ladder to break into the top-eight nationally.

"Getting into the top-8 was our goal this year. Unfortunately, we weren't able to do that," Repetto said. "Next year will be a different story."
