Man robbed on 40th Street; police trying to link cases

A description of the alleged suspect is similar to the one in Sunday's armed robbery.

A man affiliated with the University was reportedly robbed at gunpoint early yesterday morning in the second armed robbery to hit near campus this week.

According to University Police, the man was walking on the unit block of South 40th Street shortly before 2 a.m. when he was approached by an African-American man, described as about 5'7" and 160 pounds with a light beard and mustache.

Police reports said the suspect was wielding a gun at the time, but no description of the weapon was available.

The alleged robber reportedly made off with $17 in cash. He was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and black jeans.

University Police Lt. John Wiley noted the similarities between the locations and descriptions of yesterday's incident and another alleged robbery on Sunday night.

"We can never know for sure if they're related, but the descriptions are close enough to us for them to be close," Wiley said. "That's where we're focusing a lot of our attention."

On Sunday night, a male University student was allegedly robbed at gunpoint on 41st Street between Locust and Spruce streets.

The suspect reportedly jogged up to the student, who was walking south on 41st Street, and asked for money.

The suspect was described as an African-American male, about 5'8" and 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants, according to police reports.
