Baseball's May not drafted by Majors

Penn baseball star and Ivy League Player of the Year Chris May was not drafted by a Major League Baseball team in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft.

The amateur draft, which began on Tuesday, was 50 rounds long with a total of 1485 players selected from high school and college.

Despite being a third team All-American in the outfield and the best in the Ancient Eight, May did not catch the eye of any team in the Majors.

But May did earn one more honor this month, as he and another Penn baseball player -- sophomore Andrew McCreery -- were selected to the All-Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team last Friday.

May was named first team All-ECAC in the outfield, while McCreery earned an honorable mention distinction at the utility position.

Both players were also unanimous first team All-Ivy selections.

M. Track star returns as an All-American

Penn men's track star Sam Burley returned from last weekend's NCAA Championships as an All-American in the 800 meter run.

In semifinal heat one, the native of Cheyenne, Wyo., finished 0.29 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.

By coming in second with a time of 1:48.27, Burley earned himself an automatic bid to the finals. The finals bid made him an All-American.

Burley finished seventh out of eight in the finals, crossing the finish line at 1:48.44.

Also competing last weekend for the Quakers were freshman high jumper Adam Chubb and junior triple jumper Tuan Wreh.

Chubb placed 11th in a field of 20 with a jump of 2.17 meters. Wreh took 15th in a field of 19 with a leap of 15.46 meters.

The Answer leaves Lakers questioning their confidence

ESPN.com's Frank Hughes couldn't believe it. The capacity crowd at the Staples Center couldn't believe it. And the Lakers certainly couldn't believe it.

But the Sixers fans could -- and did.

Last night, the Philadelphia 76ers stunned the Los Angeles Lakers, 107-101, ending the Lakers' 19-game winning streak.

The Sixers, led by Iverson's 48 points, take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The Sixers and Lakers will meet tomorrow for Game 2.
