SPRING EDITORIAL: Fling me baby one more time!

At last, Spring Fling is here. We encourage students to kick back this weekend, but of course do so responsibly. Rain or shine -- and we'd much prefer the latter -- a variety of musical acts and carnival events will keep students entertained during the University's biggest party weekend of the year. This year's Fling features a wide array of non-alcoholic activities: the always-popular pancake breakfast, a Hawaiin-themed Hamilton Village f_te and two days of live entertainment and games in the Quadrangle. The Fling concert also features two big-name acts -- the Roots and Ben Folds Five -- sure to please a diversity of musical tastes. Given the problems organizers faced in the Palestra the last two years, we're glad that the event this year will be held on Hill Field -- no matter what Mother Nature brings. Of course, alcohol is a key component of the Fling experience for many, and that's all well and good. To those who drink this weekend -- and of course we're only referring to those students over the age of 21 -- please do so safely. We hope that students take advantage of this opportunity to show the administration that they can behave responsibly and take care of students who might imbibe a little too much while partying. And we hope that state and University law enforcement officials act responsibly as well. The regulations governing searches of students' bags are well-designed to balance the rights of students with Penn's interests in preventing underage drinking. We would hope that a few overzealous security guards don't spoil the weekend's festivities. Similarly, students should not incite law enforcement officials and -- if found engaged in illegal activities -- should take responsibility for their actions. But enough lecturing. A number of students have worked hard all year to give you plenty of options this weekend for your partying pleasure. So kick back, cut loose and let the good times roll.
