Burst pipe damages U. Museum archives The high-pressure pipe's explosion set off emergency alarms in the building and two high windows were purposely broken to let the steam -- which raised the temperature in the archives to over 110 degrees -- out of the building. At about the same time, a pipe in the museum's basement storeroom also burst. The exact cause of the burst pipes is not yet clear. No one was injured in the incident, which occurred at around noon. According to Museum Director Jeremy Sabloff, the accident did cause some steam and water damage to the archives section and to the storeroom containing some of the museum's Asian collection. Sabloff noted that the museum was "very fortunate" that the damage was minimal considering the potential for more serious harm to many of the delicate and priceless artifacts the museum holds. The value of the damage had not yet been calculated. -- Frank Cho Women faculty group honors PSAS, students The Association of Women Faculty and Administrators held its annual awards ceremony yesterday, honoring faculty members and students for their contributions to the University community and the city. Three categories of awards were given out -- the Alice Paul Award, named for the Penn alumna who wrote the Equal Rights Amendment; the Lenore Williams Award, named for the wife of a former administrator, and the Robert E. Davies Award, named for the late Penn professor and feminist. The Alice Paul Award was given to Graduate School of Nursing student Janet Lewis for her work with the Philadelphia Alliance for Labor Support and the Wise Woman Center; Graduate School of Fine Arts student Julie Torres Moskovitz for helping to organize various campus events; and Penn Students Against Sweatshops for their recent protest efforts. The association chose to honor PSAS partly because a large proportion of sweatshop workers are women. "I think it's a nice recognition for students? who are working in the community," Lewis said. The Lenore Williams Award was given to Associate Provost and Nursing Professor Barbara Lowery to honor her for being a role model. And the Robert E. Davies Award was given to Annenberg School of Communications fellow Kathryn Kolbert for her work in promoting reproductive freedom and women's rights. --ECaryn Tamber
