Defending the IMFDefending the IMFTo the Editor: The World Bank and IMF are all about ending this poverty. And they have been historically successful. For example, consider East Asia (minus Japan). In 1950, the median person had an income on par with a person in sub-Saharan Africa. Today, through massive World Bank development programs and IMF funding, East Asians have standards of living approaching our own. This didn't just happen. The IMF, World Bank and sound government policies made it happen. The Bank and IMF clearly have had some failures, but the solution is not to destroy the organizations. Some countries may be better helped by more dams than bridges or railroads than airports. But they certainly won't be helped by protestors bent on throwing successful development organizations in chaos. Benjamin Shoval Wharton '01
