LETTERS: Dean concerned about early admits

To the Editor: We are mindful of the benefits and the ramifications of enrolling a significant portion of the class under the early decision program. In fact, Penn has shown more restraint than other Ivies that admit more than half of their classes through an early program. As the pool of candidates for early programs has swelled, it has included some of the most talented students from around the world. Early programs present an opportunity for colleges and universities to enroll first-rate students who declare a specific institution a first-choice option. Most institutions have responded by enrolling more students early. This has fueled a trend where significant numbers of students believe that they must apply to an early program in order to be strategically competitive. Thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of students are not ready or are unwilling to apply early. We are aware of this as we shape the class. Nearly 75 percent of our offers of admission will be granted to regular decision applicants. They too present stellar credentials and we want to be responsive to this group. As the landscape for early programs continues to be defined, Penn will be thoughtful about its approach to early decision. We will be active participants in the conversations that transpire on the national level. Lee Stetson Dean of Admissions
