Van Pelt loses heat as steampipe bursts The valve discharged at about 2:30 p.m., causing a large amount of steam to erupt into the air on the Walnut Street side of the library for about an hour, while Facilities Services steamfitters worked to shut off the steam system and isolate the problem. Police closed the 3400 block of Walnut Street to traffic as a safety precaution for about an hour while the steam was at its greatest. While steam was immediately restored to the rest of the University, the library went without it last night as a replacement valve could not be installed until today, according to George Kelly, a Penn steamfitter. Kelly said last night that the valve would be replaced and the heat to the library restored sometime today, "as soon as it comes down from the distributor." -- Karlene Hanko
