Bilsky downs 'Cats with buzzer-beater

In 1971, Bilsky was named to the Little All-America team and teamed with Dave Wohl to form one of the best backcourts in Quakers history. Enshrined in both the Big 5 and Penn Athletic Hall of Fame, his greatest memory is a buzzer-beating shot -- often said to have been a 30-footer but here modestly described by Bilsky as a 25-footer -- he nailed to beat Villanova in '69. · Bilsky: My greatest moment as a player -- although I have been an administrator here for a while -- was in January of 1969. I was a sophomore on our basketball team, and I was recruited by Dick Harter and Digger Phelps with the hopes that someday we'd be a national power in basketball, and no one believed that could happen. We played nationally ranked Villanova in the Palestra, and they were heavy favorites. Back then, there was no shot clock, so we held the ball most of the game. The score was 30-30 with about three minutes left to go in the game, and we held for the last shot and they let us hold it. I was fortunate enough to take the shot -- it was about a 25-foot jumper -- and it's been verified, because there are pictures to prove it -- and it went through the net with two seconds left and we won the game and that was at the buzzer. It's gone down as one of the greatest shots in Big 5 history. And I'll never forget that. I've got the picture of the ball going through the net proudly displayed in my home. It was a big moment both for Penn and for me personally, obviously.
