CAMPUS EVENTS: Wharton announces new fellowship for female graduate students

Wharton officials announced last week the creation of the Meg Walsh/Lucent Technologies Woman in Finance Fellowship, an endowed $100,000 scholarship fund that will provide financial support to female graduate students majoring in finance at Wharton who would otherwise be unable to meet the cost of their education. Fellowships will be awarded for a two-year period, with the first being awarded in the fall of 1999. In addition, fellowship recipients will have the opportunity to participate in Lucent's internship and mentoring programs. The scholarship program is named for Florence (Meg) L. Walsh, a 1988 Wharton MBA alumna who served as vice-president and treasurer of Lucent before she died in May 1996 at the age of 37. "Meg's influence went far beyond her job," Lucent chairman and chief executive officer Richard A. McGinn said in a statement released last week. "This fellowship program gives Lucent and all Meg's friends and colleagues the opportunity to honor her memory in a way that extends influence to other young women who have exhibited potential at Wharton." The Wharton Loans program, an MBA scholarship for international students, was also announced last month. -- Eric Dash
