Groundbreaking today on new Huntsman Hall Because there is not enough space at the actual construction site, Jon Huntsman -- the 1959 Wharton alumnus after whom the building is named -- will break the ground at the Shearson-Lehman Quadrangle, the area between Vance Hall, the McNeil Building and Lauder-Fischer Hall. The closed ceremony, which will begin at noon, will include University President Judith Rodin, Wharton Dean Thomas Gerrity and Wharton Board of Overseers Chairperson Saul Steinberg, who serves as the chairperson and chief executive officer of Reliance Group Holdings. They will join Huntsman -- whose $40 million donation to Wharton last year is being used for the project -- in symbolically taking the first shovels of dirt to officially begin construction. In addition, Wharton School officials will unveil a 4'-by-4' scale model of the building. When completed in early 2002, Huntsman Hall will house the 4,700 students in Wharton's graduate and undergraduate programs, as well administrators and four departments. It will also provide space for 48 state-of-the-art classrooms, additional computer labs, group workstations, study and social lounges, an auditorium and two new cafes. -- Eric Dash
