SPORTS BRIEFS: Friday, March 5, 1999

M. Swimming finishes season at Easterns The Quakers finished the season with a 3-4 Ivy League record but a 9-8 overall mark. They are looking to build off improvements from many of the freshmen at the last meet against Harvard. Freshman Kenneth Goh almost swam a school-record time in the 100-yard breaststroke en route to a second-place finish against the Crimson. But there is obviously a question of how the freshmen will perform in their first Easterns. Although it is doubtful that Penn will win this weekend's meet, which serves as the Ivy League championships, there are many individuals that hope to score well in their events. This will be the final chance for Penn's three senior tri-captains to shine. Graham Rigby, Brian Cohen and Paul Poggi will feel the pressure to close out their swimming careers on a winning note. -- Rhonda Textor Golf team travels to Fla. for spring break match Before you feel sorry for the Penn golf team for having to compete over spring break, don't. The Quakers will be having fun in the sun while golfing at the Northwood Invitational in West Palm Beach, Fla. Penn will kick off the 1999 spring season on March 7, but this season promises to be unlike any other. This is the first year that Penn has a women's team. Although the women will not be expected to contend for an Ivy League title immediately, it will be interesting to see how they perform in their inaugural season. -- R.T.
