New deli opens in the 3401 Walnut complex The new Buckhead deli opened on March 4 and is operated by Cozco Management, which also operates three other storefronts in the eatery -- Eat at Joe's Express, Philly Steak and Gyro Co. and Salad Creations. The deli occupies the space formerly used by Bassett's Original Turkey, which left the food court earlier this semester. While the University is leasing the space to Cozco on a temporary basis so that it may take the space back if necessary, both Penn and Cozco officials are optimistic that the deli will be a long-term success. The deli serves gourmet sandwiches and wraps and fresh foods like baked potatoes and salads. -- Karlene Hanko Nunery takes office as VP for Business Services Leroy Nunery officially began his tenure yesterday as Penn's new vice president for Business Services. Nunery said he plans to keep busy over the upcoming weeks by meeting with his associates and staff members to learn about University affairs. "It's a good chance to get a feel for the issues," Nunery said. Nunery comes to Penn from the Chicago-based NationsBank Montgomery Securities, where he had served as managing director since 1997. His prior experience also includes serving as a vice president of the National Basketball Association. The vice president for Business Services oversees the University's business ventures, including the University Bookstore, Dining Services, and telecommunications. The position has been vacant since the former Vice President for Business Services Steve Murray died of cancer last April after six years in the position. Associate Vice President Marie Witt had served in the position on an interim basis for the past year. -- Catherine Lucey Two gunpoint robberies highlight break crime Two robberies at gunpoint and a hit-and-run were the only major crimes to plague the area around Penn's campus over spring break this year. A male University student was hit by a car while crossing 40th and Walnut streets at about 7 p.m. on March 14. The suspect fled the scene in the vehicle, police said. The victim's status was unclear yesterday. A day before, the Wawa convenience store at 3604 Chestnut Street was robbed at gunpoint at around 2:30 a.m., police said. According to University Police records, a female employee was working in the store when two men carrying guns entered and demanded that she give them money from the cash register. One of the men held a gun to her head and forced her to take about $100 from the cash register. Then the men, both of whom wore black ski masks during the incident, fled south on 36th Street in a small green car. The other campus Wawa, at 3744 Spruce Street, was also the victim of a robbery at gunpoint, police said. A female Wawa employee reported that at about 4:40 a.m. on March 10, a man entered the store and asked her for a courtesy cup of coffee. He then displayed some type of weapon to the woman and instructed her to empty the money from the cash register into a bag. He then took the bag, containing about $100, and fled west on Spruce Street on foot. -- Laura McClure
