SPORTS BRIEF: Tuesday, February 23, 1999

Four W. Tennis players compete at Princeton There were no team scores in the tournament, but the Quakers did split four matches against rival Princeton. Penn junior Anastasia Pozdniakova earned the No. 2 seed after making the finals in last year's tournament. But she suffered one of Penn's two losses to Princeton, falling in the quarterfinals to the tournament's No. 6 seed, Princeton junior Jyotsna Vasisht, 6-3, 6-3. "She is a powerful player with a big serve," Pozdniakova said of her opponent. "She didn't give me an opportunity to play my game. She overpowered me and I'm more of a finesse player." The doubles team of Pozdniakova and Brooke Herman encountered some tough luck, falling 8-6 to the second-seeded doubles team from Boston College in the opening round. They played all three Tigers doubles teams in the consolation bracket, beating two pairs before losing 8-5 to Princeton's top-seeded team in the finals of the consolation bracket. Penn had gone into the tournament confident after a 4-0 record in dual meets last weekend. "This has given me and the team a wake-up call," Penn coach Michael Dowd said. "We beat a good Richmond team but we've got to start working again to prepare for the Princeton match [at home on April 3]." One of the more impressive performances for the Quakers on the weekend was turned in by senior Julia Feldman. After being knocked out by the No. 4 seed in the first round, she defeated Syracuse's Anna Khvalina in the consolation bracket, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Penn will take the court again today against Army at Levy Tennis Pavilion at 2:00 p.m. -- Jason Bodnar
