Penn, Book Center still haven't signed new lease Both Tom Lussenhop, the University's top real estate official, and Achilles Nickles, the store's owner, said Tuesday that they expected to a sign a lease yesterday for the former location of Sam Goody at 34th and Sansom streets. But Lussenhop said yesterday that an agreement has not yet been reached. It is unclear exactly when the lease will be signed. Under the terms of the deal, the Book Center would remain in its present location -- near the corner of 38th and Walnut streets -- through the beginning of the fall semester. The store will likely move into its new location in November. Students and professors have long prized the 35-year campus landmark as a source of hard-to-find books. -- Seth Grossman Sentencing delayed for two Sled defendants The sentencing of Eugene Harrison and Yvette Stewart, two of the three people convicted on charges stemming from the 1996 murder of University scientist Vladimir Sled, was delayed yesterday because of the death of the judge trying the two cases. Common Pleas Judge Eugene Clarke Jr., a Philadelphia judge for nearly 20 years, died of an apparent heart attack on August 25 while vacationing with his wife in France, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. He was 78. Clarke presided over the trials of both Harrison, who was acquitted of the murder charge but convicted of robbery, and Stewart, who was found guilty of third-degree murder and robbery. A third defendant, Bridgette Black, pleaded guilty in June to a general charge of murder and was later sentenced to five to 12 years in prison by Common Pleas Judge Carolyn Temin. Black testified against the other two in their trials. Common Pleas Judge James Lineberger has taken over the case, according to Assistant District Attorney Mark Gilson. Lineberger will need to review the transcripts of the two trials to familiarize himself with the cases, a process which could take a few months, Gilson said. -- Ben Geldon Services to be held Wed. for murdered student A memorial service for Shannon Schieber, the first-year Wharton doctoral student murdered in her Center City apartment in May, will take place on campus next Wednesday, Wharton officials announced yesterday. The Department of Insurance and Risk Management is organizing the service, which will be in Room 17 of Logan Hall at 4:30 p.m. There will be a reception in the Logan Hall Terrace Room following the service. Schieber was a student in the department. The Philadelphia Police Department is still investigating the murder. Initially, they believed the murderer was someone Schieber knew and invited into her apartment. Now, authorities think the Chevy Chase, Md., native was strangled to death during a robbery. Authorities have not identified any suspects. People who want more information on the service can call (215) 898-7761. -- Ben Geldon
