SPORTS BRIEFS: Thursday, May 21, 1998

Heavyweight Crew wins EARC Sprints The Quakers, who won the race in 1996 but finished seventh last year, edged Princeton by six tenths of a second to win in 6:05.0. This victory is the third for the Red and Blue since 1991, making Penn the winningest team at the Sprints Championships in the 1990s. The second varsity eight boat and the freshman eight boat both took home fourth place. Athletic Hall of Fame inducts second class In celebration of Alumni Weekend, Penn inducted the second class into its Athletic Hall of Fame. The 42-member class follows 1996's inaugural class of 46 athletes. The athletes were officially inducted in a ceremony at the Wyndham-Franklin Plaza Hotel on May 16. Members of the Class of 1998 span 94 years, ranging from nineteenth century track star George Orton to former Penn and current Philadelphia Wings lacrosse star Chris Flynn. Other notable inductees include former star basketball guard and current Penn athletic director Steve Bilsky and National Basketball Hall of Fame member Chuck Daly, who coached Penn in the 1970s before leading the Detroit Pistons to two NBA titles. Tigers advance to NCAA Lax Final Four Princeton took another step towards its third consecutive men's lacrosse national championship by advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA tournament. The Tigers ousted Duke, 11-9, and will face Syracuse in the Final Four this Saturday at Rutgers. The Blue Devils jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the second quarter but were only able to score one more goal for the rest of the game. Princeton midfielder Josh Sims scored three goals for the Tigers, and attackman Jon Hess netted two. The win improves Princeton's overall record to 12-1, with an early season loss to Virginia being the only blemish. -- Rick Haggerty
