and Renato Mariotti The Chicago Maroon CHICAGO (U-WIRE) -- Tragedy struck the University of Chicago last Sunday when an elderly woman drove her car into a crowd of students waiting for the bus, striking five and seriously injuring two. Michelle Martone, a senior at the school, remains in critical condition at Cook County Hospital. Freshman Charles Hamilton, a first-year resident of Compton House, is in stable condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The driver of the car, Margaret Kovacs, 80, had no comment on the accident. Martone suffered severe head trauma, according to a spokesperson for Cook County Hospital. She also underwent surgery in attempt to stop bleeding in her brain and is now receiving treatment to decrease the brain's swelling. Doctors have induced a coma state in Martone to reduce her brain activity in the hope of increasing the speed of her healing. She also suffered a broken tibia, as well as other minor injuries. Hamilton suffered a broken leg and arm as well as other injuries. Doctors conducted CAT scans and are currently concerned with fluid exiting his ear and the condition of his spinal column. He is on heavy pain medication and will undergo knee surgery today. Two other students suffered minor injuries in the accident, but were treated at the scene and released. In the aftermath of the incident, many students have had to cope with the trauma of witnessing Sunday's accident or knowing one of its victims. "I felt my own mortality.? I could have easily gotten hit myself. I'm still a bit shaken. I'm trying to make sense of the whole thing," one witness said.
