To the Editor: The Iraqi regime is an undemocratic government that uses coercive techniques to maintain authority over its own people. Saddam Hussein has previously used chemical weapons as well as torture and conventional weapons on Iraqi citizens. Furthermore, not only did he instigate the eight-year Iran-Iraq War, he also invaded the sovereign nation of Kuwait. In the Iran-Iraq War, Hussein used chemical weapons on Iranians. In the Gulf War, Hussein continued his terrorist tactics as he utilized SCUD missiles against innocent Israeli civilians. The Iraqi regime, and its desire to maintain an arsenal of weapons of mass destruction, must be isolated and forced to conform to accepted norms of behavior in the international state system. Given the potential threat of nonconventional weapons to the United States and our allies, President Clinton took a strong stance to ensure compliance with the various United Nations Security Council resolutions. As demonstrated by the lack of protests at Penn, the foresight of the Clinton Administration against this threat garners strong support across the political spectrum and is the appropriate response against the tyrannical Iraqi regime. I think it shameful that you would run an illustration equating the Crucifixion to the loss of a college sport. Such equations are more than simply in poor taste, they are belittling to Christians and their beliefs. Jeffrey Hill College '01
