Manhattan Bagel won't come to Penn's campus The store's parent company, based in Eatontown, N.J., filed for bankruptcy protection last November after reporting a loss of $14 million during the first nine months of 1997. Officials there could not be reached for comment yesterday. The University is currently negotiating to purchase the property from its current owner, Ken Gross, according to Penn Managing Director of Real Estate Tom Lussenhop. Gross could not be reached for comment yesterday. According to Lussenhop, the University is "looking at a number of options" for the site, including maintaining it as green space or turning it into a parking lot. He added that a store will most likely not be built on the property since it is "not a terrifically viable commercial site." The lot had formerly housed a Getty gas station. Manhattan Bagel is at least the second bagel store that was slated to be built on the site but never arrived. In 1995, city officials announced that a Bagel Builders would be constructed on the land. -- Sari Post
