Duke official to take helm of SAS finances Michael Mandl will arrive in February from Duke University to serve as SAS's new vice dean for finance and administration. Mandl was appointed in December by then-Interim Dean Walter Wales. In his new post, Mandl will serve as the chief administrative and financial officer for SAS, overseeing budgetary, computing, facilities and administrative personnel matters. In Wales' December 23 announcement to the faculty, he confirmed that Mandl's appointment to the long-vacant position was the result of SAS's continuing fiscal turmoil. At Duke, in Durham, N.C., Mandl played an instrumental role in the development and implementation of Duke's new on-line budget and planning system. Also, he has worked closely with Duke administrators in analyzing issues ranging from federal funding to undergraduate financial aid. SAS ended fiscal year 1997 with a deficit of about $1 million. Its frequent budget troubles have raised concerns about the future of the school's academic initiatives and hiring. -- Ginny Dorsey
