The proposed exercise facility for High Rise South is exactly what students asked for. Students have told University administrators they wanted to exercise closer to home, and that Hutchinson or Gimbel gymnasiums are inconvenient to use. Now, they are getting what they asked for. The student-run Committee for Tangible Change, the Residential Advisory Board and Recreation Director Mike Diorka have proposed an excellent solution to meet student needs with the creation of the exercise center. When the facility opens in 1998, it will give students the opportunity to work out on the west end of campus without having to trek to the athletic facilities. While details on what type of equipment will be in the gym and the hours it will be open remain hazy, the facility is a marked improvement in the quality of life for students who live on campus. We urge administrators to keep membership costs at a minimum, if there are any at all. Low fees may encourage more students to live on campus if they know it's a short elevator ride to the nearest fitness center. So long as no weights drop into 24th-floor High Rise South apartments, the proposed fitness center should pump students up.
