Volunteer summit hits campus this weekend Entitled "Philadelphia's Promise: the Alliance for Youth's Summit on Youth and Volunteerism," the conference will feature appearances from Mayor Ed Rendell, University President Judith Rodin, former Rep. William Gray and former Sen. Harris Wofford. Opening ceremonies will begin tonight at 5 p.m., and a day of workshops and planning sessions will be held tomorrow from 8:30 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. More than 500 community leaders, clergy, high school students and union representatives will participate in the workshops, which will try to determine how the region will get its share of national corporate pledges made during last April's summit. The conference -- which is sponsored by the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News -- is not open to the public. -- Michael Brus Copy Service employee abducted, robbed A female employee of Houston Hall's University Copy Service was temporarily abducted and robbed of more than $14,000 of the store's money at approximately 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, store officials said The woman was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania after the incident, but did not suffer major injuries. The incident is being investigated by the University and Philadelphia Police departments. Two men grabbed the employee by her throat and pushed her down onto the floor of a Cadillac on the southwest corner of 33rd and Walnut streets, University Copy Service co-owner Larry Mapp said. The robbers then demanded all of her money -- which included $1,000 in cash and $13,000 in checks -- and the Walkman she was carrying, according to Mapp. The checks have already been cancelled, and the store will not lose any of the money from the checks. The men let her out of the car at 44th Street and Woodland Avenue. She then walked north until she found a telephone and called Mapp, who called the police. The woman had been carrying so much money because she had agreed to make the store's regular drop at the bank. "We'll never do deposits that way again," Mapp said. -- Ian Rosenblum
