Kick on a door enough times and sooner or later it will come down. And so the goals came as the Penn women's soccer team earned its first victory against Bucknell since 1992. Under the rain and lights of the Lewisburg, Pa., night, the Quakers poured on the offense against the Bison. Sophomore Andrea Callaghan -- showing the goal-scoring prowess she couldn't during an injury-riddled freshman campaign -- opened the scoring in the 26th minute and later added an insurance goal to close out the 3-0 shutout. Quakers freshman Emily Goodman also scored early in the second half, and sophomore goalie Anne Kluetmeier stopped all three Bison shots. The anticipated similarities between the two squads did not show in the final numbers. Penn was in command of the game, putting 13 shots on net and earning four corner-kick opportunities, 10 more shots and three more corners than Bucknell. Set opportunities had been an early source of goals for Bucknell during their recent wins. These lopsided numbers can also be attributed in great part to the Quakers' continued emphasis on defense. The last two meetings between the teams featured come-from-behind efforts by the Quakers to salvage draws. No such rallies were needed last night, as any early defensive lapses of the past did not show up on the scoreboard. Even though the season is still young, a good sign for Penn is the scoring contribution put forth by the freshmen, accounting for two of the four Quakers' goals to date. The two teams played to draws in three of the last four years. Two years ago, the Quakers need a late score in Lewisburg from Yuka Morita to get a result. Last season, the the two teams repeated the 2-2 scoreline at Rhodes Field. Penn improves to 2-2-3 all time against the Bison. Before the game, the Quakers had expected a better result, due to a beefed-up schedule. Last weekend, Penn got a taste of soccer at the next level when it traveled to the Maryland Tournament, where it faced -- and lost, 2-0 -- to the national No. 10 Terrapins. They also defeated Loyola (Md.) by a single goal. After playing solidly on the road to open the season, Penn (2-1) now looks to build on its strong play during the upcoming four-game homestand, including the Ivy League opener against Dartmouth at Rhodes Field. Bucknell (4-2) also heads into their league play this weekend with a Patriot League game against Colgate.
