Gage injuries left foot, may miss up to six weeks

Preliminary examination if the senior cocaptain revealed a broken bone Penn football co-captain Tim Gage injured his left foot in practice on Tuesday and may have to sit out the next six weeks. Although no official word has been given yet, Gage's preliminary examination revealed a broken bone which would force him to sit on the sidelines, according to Shaun May, Director of Athletics Communications. Gage is currently seeking a second opinion and will decide whether or not to play on his injured foot in the season opener on September 21 at Dartmouth. An announcement is expected before next week. The 6-foot-2, 223 pound Cranesville, Pa., native racked up 90 tackles as a linebacker last season, 54 of which were unassisted. Gage also recorded two sacks and 10 tackles for losses in 1995. To his merit, he received second-team all-Ivy status in his first season as a starter. Gage was expected to move into a starting position on a defensive line that is considered one of the strengths of the '96 squad. The line will be anchored by veterans Mitch Marrow, Chris Osentowski and Tom Foley. Should Gage be forced to the bench, seniors Mike Elsey and Mike Kennedy figure to see increased minutes on the line. One year after being asked to fill the shoes of former Penn all-Ivy picks Pat Goodwillie and Kevin DeLuca at linebacker, Gage faced the unenviable task of helping to replace '95 all-Ivy lineman Tom McGarrity, who lead the team in sacks his senior season with 12.
