EDITORIAL: Under Construction

Logan and College Halls have been under construction since the 1980's. Problems have arisen over the years, pushing back completion of the renovation and restoration projects. The now-scrapped Revlon Center was slated to open in 1993. And the Women's Center was supposed to move into the former Theta Xi fraternity house on Locust Walk at the end of 1994. Just recently, replacement of the Locust Walk bluestones was pushed back due to bidding difficulties. Now the University has announced plans to eventually implement futuristic identification technology in all of the Residential Living locations. The idea, itself, is great. It would increase safety and possibly give students peace of mind. But we are concerned that the University is spreading itself too thin. With so many projects underway and all-too-regular delays, it seems as if the University is perpetually under construction. Instead of focusing on one improvement project, the University tries to tackle four or five -- at once. Before one is finished, another is started. Deadlines are rarely adhered to. We are not saying that the University should cease looking to renovate and improve. They should, however, set more reasonable goals.
