Princeton takes 3rd M. Lax title

Compiled by the SP Sports Staff Princeton (14-1) had let a three-goal fourth quarter lead slip away, but succeeded in getting the ball to sophomore star Hubbard, who found the net for the third time with a low bounding shot. His goal ended the game, which was broadcast to a live television audience on ESPN. Virginia slipped to 13-4 on the year. Two days before, the Tigers had slipped past high-powered Syracuse to earn a place in the final. Although Princeton ran out to an early 7-1 lead, the Orangeman (11-4) rallied to tie the game in the fourth quarter before Ben Strutt put the favorites in front for good. Princeton had held the No.1 ranking in all the national polls and in the tournament seedings. The program, which has blossomed under head coach Bill Tierney, had won previous national titles in 1992 and 1994. All three Tigers championship games have been decided in overtime. This was also the Tigers' second title victory at the University of Maryland's facility. Princeton's other surviving team, the baseball squad, did not fare as well as their lacrosse brethren. In the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1991, the Tigers (26-21) were eliminated from the South I regional in Tuscaloosa, Al., in two straight games. The first was Thursday against Alabama, who drubbed the Tigers 19-2 in front of their home crowd. The Tigers exited the tourney the next day at the hands of No. 14 Virginia (44-21) by a count of 12-2. Alabama emerged from the regional and will take their Baseball America No.1 ranking into this weekend's College World Series in Omaha, Neb. The baseball team had been riding a wave of hot plate, including five wins over Penn and a sweep of Rider in the NCAA Play-In in the last month.
